Last victim identified in deadly Fort Worth crash

The fifth person killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 30 last weekend was identified on Wednesday.

Claudia Barraza, 37, of Fort Worth was pronounced dead at 2:50 a.m. Sunday at the scene of the collisions on Interstate 30 near Oakland Boulevard, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Police have said that after a BMW driver struck a concrete barrier in the center of the highway, other motorists stopped to help. Then a truck carrying newspapers came up over a hill and crashed into the crowd.

It could not be confirmed where Barraza was when she was killed. A Fort Worth police spokeswoman said she could not provide information Wednesday evening.

Barraza’s family could not be reached to comment.

The four other people killed were:

▪ Mary Hernandez, 42, of Fort Worth, who died of blunt force trauma to the head, chest, abdomen and extremities on the outside westbound shoulder of I-30, according to the medical examiner.

▪ Steve Franklin, 45, of Fort Worth, who died in the outside lane of the highway, according to the medical examiner. The cause of his death was not listed Wednesday.

▪ Veronica Gonzalez, 43, of Fort Worth, who died of blunt force trauma of the head, chest abdomen and extremities on the roadway edge of I-30, according to the medical examiner.

▪ Clarissa Banda-Castillo, 18, of San Antonio, died at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, her mother told the Star-Telegram.

Ely Alba-Gonzalez, Veronica Gonzalez’s fiancee, remained hospitalized at John Peter Smith Wednesday where Rev. Stephen Jasso of All Saints Catholic Church said he visited her.

“We are just so sad for this family. So many people lost their lives,” he said.

Banda-Castillo is Alba-Gonzalez’s little sister.

Jasso said Alba-Gonzalez’s father was a member of All Saints Catholic Church until his death two years ago.

“She was a little girl when I got here 21 years ago,” Jasso said.
