He found thousands in cash on the road and knew 'someone's going to have a bad day'
A stranger gave a Fort Worth business owner and his family something to be extra thankful for today.
Soofia Malik tells Fox 4 News that her husband was doing his son a favor Wednesday evening by taking his deposit to the bank. The money bag contained $7,000 in cash and checks from the son's gas station business, she said.
"He put the bag on top of the car and went outside to check the mail, and when he came inside to take the car from the garage, he drove off and he forgot," Malik told Fox 4 News. The bag slid off the car near Trail Lake Drive and Altamesa Boulevard in southwest Fort Worth.
It wasn't long before her husband realized what had happened.
"He was really stressful, you know, because he's a heart patient, too," Malik said. She said she told her husband they'd never see the money again – it's the holidays, after all.
Enter Gene Fleetwood, who happened to be driving by and spotted the bank bag in the road.
"I looked inside, and I'm thinking, 'Someone's going to have a bad day,' " he told Fox 4 News.
He took the bag to the nearest police substation and that's where he hooked up with Soofia Malik.
"He's like an angel to us," Malik told CBSDFW.com. "He is [a] really honest person. I can't believe that."
She told Fox 4 News that they exchanged information and she invited Fleetwood over for dinner.
Still a lot of good people in the world, especially here in Texas. God bless you Gene.
