Floor collapsed at Denton apartment complex, minor injuries reported

A floor collapsed early Sunday at an apartment complex where authorities say videos posted on social media show residents jumping up and down on it before it fell.

At least six people were treated for minor injuries, but no one was taken to hospitals.

Firefighters responded to the collapse about 1:43 a.m. at The Ridge at North Texas, 2700 block of Colorado Boulevard, Building 1.

An apartment website says the complex is a student-only community for students at the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University and North Centeral Texas College.

Firefighters received a 911 call indicating a floor collapse. Once they got the scene, fire officials upgraded the call to potential mass casualty incident and requested additional support from other fire rescue units and Denton police.

“An exhaustive search and rescue operation was carried out by Denton fire rescue and all occupants of the effected building were evacuated,” Fire Marshal Brad Lahart said in a Sunday news release. “A medial triage was set up, but only minor injuries were reported.”

A preliminary investigation indicated that there was a large party on the third-floor of Building 1. Videos posted on social medial showed party-goers jumping and up and down when the floor gave way and dropped to the second-floor apartment below.

Investigation into the structural failure of the balcony continued Sunday.

About 50 residents were displaced and authorities were working to provide them assistance.
