Denton man accused in 11 holdups of motels, stores in 77 days

A Denton man was in custody Wednesday, accused of robbing 11 motels and stores in the city starting in August, police said.

Detectives said they believe Xavier Deylow Perkins, 28, was armed when he committed the holdups that started Aug. 21.

Perkins was arrested without incident Monday night in a Denton motel after, police say, he robbed the Family Dollar on Maple Street and then hit the EZ Check Grocery on Londonderry Lane.

Detectives said they believe the same suspect burglarized a Dollar General on Aug. 21. He attempted a robbery at the Hampton Inn the next day.

The suspect then hit a robbery streak, all in Denton: a 7-Eleven and Corner Stop store on Sept. 5; Super 8 Motel on Sept. 6; a Quality Inn Motel on Sept. 11; Dollar General on Sept. 15; 7-Eleven on Sept. 25; Exxon store on Oct. 6; Dollar General on Oct. 23; and the two on Monday.

Perkins became a person of interest after a vehicle was observed in surveillance videos at some of the holdup locations.

"Using this information, investigators began surveillance on the vehicle and subject," Officer Shane Kizer said in a news release. "At that point in time, investigators did not have sufficient information to connect the subject' to any specific offense."

On Monday night after the two holdups, police tracked Perkins to a Super 8 Motel and took him into custody.

After his arrest and armed with search warrants, police searched his vehicle and his motel room, recovering evidence that tied him to the holdups, Kizer said.

Perkins was in the Denton County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bail. He faces two charges of robbery, according to jail records.
