Pelican Bay police shoot man who tried to attack officer, chief says
A police officer shot a man in Pelican Bay on Tuesday night after he fled from a traffic stop and tried to attack the officer with a weapon, police Chief Robert Porter said in a news release.
The incident happened about 8:40 p.m. in the 13100 block of Liberty School Road.
The suspect, Sterling Myles Jonkheer, 22, survived the shooting and remained in the Tarrant County Jail on Thursday with his bail set at $12,500, according to online records.
Jonkheer had driven away during a traffic stop, and then fled his vehicle on foot, according to the news release. During a “scuffle” with an officer, Jonkheer tried to attack the officer with a weapon, Porter said.
The officer told Jonkheer multiple times to drop the weapon but he did not, according to the news release. The officer then fired two gunshots, striking Jonkheer in the upper torso.
Jonkheer was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was treated and released. He faces charges of evading arrest and resisting arrest, according to jail records.
The officer involved was placed on administrative leave while the Texas Rangers investigate the shooting, police said.
