Marie L. Canizales was a single mother raising her 5-year-old son.

Her father, Sergio Canizales, said his 28-year-old daughter lived week to week on her paycheck, working to provide a good life for her son, Dylan Williams.

The Everman High School graduate had been baby-sitting during the weekend, her father said, and was on her way home early Sunday.

She never got home.

Marie Canizales was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision on Boat Club Road. A 25-year-old Fort Worth man is accused of intoxication manslaughter.

“She was such a devoted mother,” Sergio Canizales said Wednesday as he fought back tears during a telephone interview. “She had been babysitting to let another mother have a night out.”

She had been a trainer at the school, her father said.

Police officials did not identify the suspect because he remained in a Fort Worth hospital and has not been arraigned, but police reports identified him as Adolph Cirilo Lopez III of Fort Worth.

The fatal accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 6400 block of Boat Club Road.

Marie Canizales’s vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Lopez, according to police reports. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a ruling by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Lopez was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital, police said.

Tarrant County criminal court records indicated Lopez was previously arrested in August, accused of resisting arrest.

No other injuries were reported.

“She is a caring and loving woman,” Sergio Canizales said in a GoFundMe memorial account for his daughter. The account was established to help the family pay for Marie Canizales’ funeral.

Her father had raised more than $2,300 in the brief time after he established the GoFundMe memorial account. He hopes to raise $10,000.

“All monies left over will be used for therapy and day-to-day expenses,” her father wrote.

Survivors include her parents, Sergio and Elisa, and two younger brothers.

“She had a wealth of friends,” her father said Wednesday. “She was my daughter and a friend.”
