Schieffer Symposium to feature high-profile journalists

A political writer, national morning news anchor and foreign news correspondent will be among the panelists Wednesday at the 11th annual Schieffer Symposium at Texas Christian University.

Four journalists will join Bob Schieffer, a 1959 graduate of TCU and anchor of CBS’s Face the Nation, to discuss world news and current events at Ed Landreth Auditorium.

Panelists are Dan Balz, Washington Post political correspondent; Gayle King, co-anchor of CBS This morning and editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine; P.J. O’Rourke, political satirist and journalist; and Holly Williams, CBS News foreign correspondent.

Schieffer, who handpicks the panelists, has hosted this symposium every year since its creation.

“He picks people that he feels are able to speak to current news events and things going on in the world today,” said Margaret Kelly, executive director of community projects who handles logistics for the symposium.

Current events such as the growing ISIS situation are likely topics as Williams has previously reported from Syria and Gaza Strip, Kelly said.

Schieffer, 78, has been a reporter for more than a half-century and has anchored Face the Nation for the past 24 years. Before joining CBS in 1969, he worked at the Star-Telegram where he was the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam.
