Star-Telegram finishes 2nd for newspaper of the year
The Star-Telegram finished second in the newspaper of the year category at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors 2014 journalism awards, the last of which were handed out Sunday morning.
The Star-Telegram finished second to the Austin American-Statesman and ahead of the Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle.
The Star-Telegram received honorable mention for best online newspaper, a category that was won by the Morning News.
In other awards handed out Sunday, Star-Telegram staff writer Yamil Berard received honorable mention in the freedom of information category.
APME gives the awards annually “to recognize outstanding journalism as practiced by the state’s daily newspapers.” Most of the categories involve one piece of work by a journalist.
On Saturday, La Estrella, a Star-Telegram publication, again was named the top Texas Spanish language newspaper by APME. La Estrella staff members who also won individual prizes include Raúl Caballero, Luis Ángel Galván, Denise Isla, Juan Antonio Ramos and Carolina Guzmán Rincón.
Other Star-Telegram award winners:
▪ Staff writer Deanna Boyd won honorable mention in the features category.
▪ Lee Williams, managing editor for news, won first place and honorable mention in the short features category.
▪ Designer Mark Hoffer took third place in the category of feature page design by an individual.
The APME and the Headliners Foundation of Texas also name Charles E. Green Star Award winners for larger bodies of work on Saturday.
Star-Telegram sports designer Seth Schrock won second place in the Star Designer of the Year category.
Berard took second in the Star Investigative Report of the year.
Texas newspapers compete in divisions by Sunday circulation. The Star-Telegramcompetes in the largest class, newspapers with Sunday circulation of 125,000 or more.
The Collegian of Tarrant County College won first place in College Newspaper of the Year, non-daily division. Second place went to The Shorthorn at the University of Texas at Arlington.
