A motorist faces a possible driving while intoxicated charge after a collision on Interstate 35W early Monday injured three Fort Worth firefighters, police said.

The wreck also involved an unoccupied Fort Worth police patrol car.

Armando O. Rodriguez, 26, of Midlothian was in a Fort Worth jail Monday afternoon. The bail amount was not available.

Rodriguez faces a charge of DWI pending the results of blood tests, officer Natosha Tucker, a department spokeswoman, said in an email.

Rodriguez also received traffic citations of failure to vacate (to move out of the lane closest to an emergency vehicle) and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.

The firefighters’ injuries were not considered life-threatening. They were treated and released from a hospital shortly after the crash, fire officials said.

The collision was reported shortly before 4 a.m. Monday on I-35W at Golden Triangle Boulevard in far north Fort Worth.

Firefighters and police had responded to an unrelated wreck involving two cars. A pickup slammed into the unoccupied patrol car, which was then shoved into the firetruck, fire Battalion Chief Richard Harrison said in a news release.

The pickup ended up on its side, and the driver was treated at the scene.
