The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has hired a veteran leader in the arts community, including Dallas, as its interim president.

David Hyslop, who most recently served as the interim managing director of Dallas Summer Musicals, will begin his new job July 24, according to a news release from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association.

He will stay on until a permanent president is appointed. The search for a new president is expected to take less than a year.

Hyslop will replace Amy Adkins, who is leaving the FWSO after six years as its president. She is leaving in July to take a job as president of All Saints Health Foundation.

Adkins' departure announcement comes months after the orchestra and its musicians resolved a labor strike that had canceled concerts from mid-September through the end of 2016. The strike ended in December, when an anonymous donor gave $700,000 to cover the increased cost of the musicians’ salaries.

“We are very fortunate that someone with David’s level of experience in orchestra management is available to assist the FWSO during this transition period,” Mercedes T. Bass, Chairman of the Board, said in a news release.

Hyslop has served as CEO for three of the nation’s top symphony orchestras: the Oregon Symphony from 1971-78; the St. Louis Symphony from 1978-91; and the Minnesota Orchestra from 1991-2003.

Since retiring from the Minnesota job, Hyslop has worked as a consultant to arts groups around the country, and has served as interim CEO of the Louisville Orchestra and Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

“It will be my honor and pleasure to work with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra during this transition period,” said Hyslop. “My main goal will be to help all facets of the organization, after this most recent difficult period, to work together going forward with its mission to provide great music for the community it serves.”
