This guy’s birth wasn’t livestreamed to millions

At birth, he weighed 185 pounds and stood 6 feet tall. And that’s considered little.

He’s the latest addition to the giraffe herd at the Fort Worth Zoo (reticulated giraffes, to be precise).

The as-yet unnamed calf was born June 8 to mom Kala, 14, and dad Captain, 7, with none of the hoopla or drama that accompanied the livestream birth of April the Giraffe’s baby in April.

“We did not have a webcam, so we differed in that way,” zoo spokeswoman Avery Elander said Thursday.

She said the zoo had been expecting Kala to give birth from mid-May to the end of June, but never entertained the idea of publicly promoting the event a la April.

“We were ready and waiting internally. We wanted to keep it a surprise,” she said.

The giraffe, whose name has yet to be determined, was born after a gestation period of nearly 15 months and will eventually grow to 3,000 pounds and 18 feet from head to foot, seven of which will be his neck, Elander said.

“He got out to explore a little bit yesterday” for the first time, she said. To mark the occasion, the zoo sent out a video showing him prancing with the big kids like he’s been doing it for years.

He’ll be out with the other seven giraffes in the herd during regular zoo hours — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends. He’ll be moving with the herd to the zoo’s African Savanna exhibit — joining zebras, kudus, springboks and various bird species — in spring 2018.

The Fort Worth Zoo is a participant in a cooperative breeding program with other zoos in the country to help keep the giraffes from extinction, Elander said in a statement.
