Fort Worth boy killed in ATV accident

A 10-year-old Fort Worth boy was killed Saturday when his all-terrain vehicle crashed into a pickup at a campsite in Montague County, the sheriff said Monday.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the boy as Nicholas Torres. He was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Nicholas died from multiple traumatic injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The wreck occurred at 5:30 p.m. Saturday near Farm Road 3206 near Saint Jo in Montague County at the Rednecks with Paychecks Off-Road, a four-day event that attracted more than 10,000 people, organizers said. Music and campsites were available at the event, which featured 1,200 acres of deep and shallow mud pits, canyons, creek beds and rock courses for off-road vehicles, according to the RWP website.

Nicholas and another young boy were driving ATVs at a campsite when they pulled out in front of a pickup on a dirt road, Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham said Monday.

“The boys were in between two trailers and came out onto the road,” Cunningham said, adding that Nicholas ran into the pickup.

He was taken to the Fort Worth hospital, where he died.

The other boy and the pickup driver were not injured, authorities said.
