Tarrant County woman injured while exploring old Baker Hotel
A 29-year-old woman from Tarrant County was hospitalized after she fell while exploring the vacated Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells last week, a fire official told the Mineral Wells Index newspaper.
She was near the back of the hotel when she fell about 10-15 feet, a fire department report said.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the hotel about 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Mineral Wells assistant fire chief Ryan Dunn told the Index that the woman suffered “moderate injuries.” Crews discovered a door in the hotel, which made her rescue easier, accoring to the newspaper.
The hotel closed in 1972, but the decaying building still towers over Mineral Wells, a town of about 16,000 an hour west of Fort Worth.
When the Baker opened in 1929, it featured mineral baths, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a rooftop nightclub.
“Back in those days, the Baker would probably rival anything in Las Vegas today,” former assistant manager Roy D. Walker told the Star-Telegram in 1993.
Since closing, it’s become an attraction for history buffs, explorers and websites, many of which claim the hotel is haunted. Check out photos from inside the old building in the slideshow above. Earlier this year, a group hoping to restore the hotel put together the video below in hopes of attracting foreign investors.
