A Fort Worth man with a history of mental problems faces a murder charge after his mother was stabbed to death Monday evening in northwest Fort Worth near Eagle Mountain Lake, police said.

When officers responded to a call at 5:29 p.m. in the 7500 block of Gleneagles Way, they found Lauren LaBar, 57, with multiple stab sounds and the suspect, Paul LaBar, 26, inside the home, police said.

Paul Robert LaBar was arrested, and Lauren LaBar died at 10:16 p.m. at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website.

Before his mother died, Paul LaBar was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault-serious bodily injury after he was interviewed by a homicide detective, who was at the scene because of LaBar’s grave condition, said Sgt. Marc Povero, police spokesman.

Detectives will upgrade the charge to murder, Povero said.

LaBar had a previous history of violence against family members, court documents indicate.

On May 27, 2013, Fort Worth were dispatched to the Gleneagles Way residence on a reported domestic disturbance.

LaBar’s 58-year-old father, also named Paul LaBar, told officers that his son had assaulted him five days earlier after the father tried to stop an argument over a video game between the then 22-year-old and his younger brother.

The father told police that his son had punched him in the face, then got on top of him and choked him around the neck with both hands. He told police his son then let go and walked away.

The father said he called police five days later because his son was refusing to do what was asked of him and was becoming hostile toward him and his wife.

Police interviewed the son on the scene but he refused to give a written statement.

The father later told a detective assigned to the case that his son was on medication for mental health issues but refused to take it and, as a result, has anger issues.

Police later arrested LaBar on an assault warrant in connection with that case.

Court records show LaBar was later accepted into the Mental Health Court Diversion Program, designed to divert mentally impaired offenders out of the traditional criminal justice system and into treatment.

His enrollment in the program, however, was later revoked and in July 2014, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault of a family member and sentenced to 90 days in jail and a $372 fine.
