Carroll ISD plans to sell Durham Intermediate school. Here’s what happens next
The Carroll Independent School District is moving forward with plans to sell Durham Intermediate School, with a vote to declare the school surplus property expected April 20.
The proposal to declare the surplus property was discussed as a special board meeting April 13. This declaration is the first step the district needs to take to begin the process of advertising the property for sale.
Chase Park, deputy superintendent of business & finance, told the board April 13 that transactions like this take time to work with the city council on any zoning changes, and also to have enough time to work with bidders before the school is closed in 2027.
“We’d like to get as much of a head start as we can while the building is occupied,” Park said. “So that once its does go offline, we can shorten that time of holding onto property that’s no longer being used.”
Park said that, along with the declaration, the administration also recommends hiring Engel & Völkers, a Texas based real estate brokerage company to handle the sale of the property. The district has used this firm for other property in the past.
“The appraisal has already been done so we kind of already know our baseline,” superintendent, Jeremy Glenn said. “ The next step is to have somebody that can walk us through that.”
The district declined to release the amount for which the property was appraised. The Tarrant Appraisal Districts website lists the total appraisal value in 2025 at $3,073,802.
All of this comes after the board voted to close the school and consolidate middle schools in 2027 due to low enrollment.
School closures are impacting a number of communities in North Texas, including Keller, Fort Worth and Grapevine-Colleyville independent school districts, as the number of incoming kindergarten students continues to drop amid low birth rates across the nation.
The Fort Worth ISD new state-appointed Board of Managers is expected to vote April 14 on even more measures to deal with school closures including a reduction in staffing.
Durham is an intermediate school for fifth- and sixth-grade students. The students from Durham will be transitioned to one of the middle schools.
The consolidation of grades will not take effect until the 2027-2028 school year in order to prepare students and staff for the change.
The district previously said Durham Intermediate’s building is in need of repairs, and the cost of maintaining the campus would exceed $8 million.
According to the agenda packet, there is no amount set for the cost of the legal and transaction fees for the possible sale but the district does expect to have that number later. The board is expected to vote on the proposal at the next board meeting on April 20.
