Grapevine-Colleyville superintendent Brad Schnautz resigned Friday to take a job as executive director of Region 11 of the Education Service Center.

The Education Service Center Region 11 is one of 20 established by Texas lawmakers in the 1960s. The service center offers training, resources, and technical assistance for Texas school districts. Region 11 supports 10 counties, 76 public school districts and over 500,000 students. The region includes Tarrant, Denton, Parker, Wise and Johnson counties.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the Region 11 community,” Schnautz said in a statement posted by the Education Service Center. “This region reflects the true diversity and strength of Texas schools, and I am inspired by the educators who work every day on behalf of more than half a million students.”

The news comes just days after a contentious meeting between the school district’s Board of Trustees and parents over the planned closures of Bransford Elementary in Colleyville and Dove Elementary in Grapevine.

The potential closures are part of the district’s plans to address a $10 million budget shortfall, and would save the district around $1.1 million. The recommendation was made after a committee was formed in January to come up with solutions for the district’s declining enrollment and funding losses.

Parents at both schools have expressed dismay and concern over the potential closures, and have held multiple meetings to discuss other options.

Schnautz will begin his new position Jan. 5, according to a statement from the school district, and the board will “immediately” begin the transition process.

He was named superintendent in 2023 and has been an administrator in the district since 2017.

The board will vote on the potential closures at its meeting on Dec. 10. There will a community forum on Dec. 2.
