Deadline extended for applications to Fort Worth ISD’s board of managers
The deadline for applications to serve on Fort Worth ISD’s state-appointed board of managers has been extended until Dec. 1, officials with the Texas Education Agency said Wednesday.
The extension is due to a “high level of interest” with over 800 applications currently in progress, according to a statement.
If appointed, the board of managers would temporarily replace Fort Worth ISD’s elected school board during a state takeover of the district, with candidates approved by Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath.
The agency has received 180 completed applications from Fort Worth residents, of which 140 are from individuals who reside within Fort Worth ISD’s boundaries, according to the statement.
“This overwhelming response demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting the district’s students and their local schools,” officials said. “TEA will thoroughly review each application and encourages anyone with a desire to serve and the belief that all students can learn to apply.”
The Fort Worth ISD school board on Tuesday agreed to appeal the state’s decision to take over the school district.
In a 7-1 vote, the existing board moved to ask the State Office of Administrative Hearings to review Morath’s decision, the last step in the appeal process.
Selection of the board of managers would not occur until after that appeal has been decided.
