The Keller school district has listed land it bought July 2024 as part of an effort to stop a proposed motel.

A pair of for sale signs were spotted on the 2.2 acre parcel that borders the parking lot of Basswood Elementary School.

The property has not been listed online, and the district’s real estate brokers did not respond to two phone calls, an email, and a text message from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

The district publically announced plans to sell the property at a Feb. 27 school board meeting after privately discussing the sale with officials at the city of Fort Worth.

Superintendent Cory Wilson said at the February board meeting the district planned to sell the property to recoup some of the $3.2 million spent on acquiring it.

“The district routinely reviews the value of its real property in relation to market trends to identify opportunities that may benefit the district,” a district spokesperson said in an email to the Star-Telegram.

The district is selling two other properties in addition to the Basswood Elementary property, the spokesperson said.

It’s selling a 20-acre plot at 901 Johnson Road in Keller, just north of the Keller High School tennis courts, and a 4.5 acre plot at 3095 Johnson Road in Southlake that previously housed Florence Elementary School, according to the spokesperson.

The listing comes roughly eight months after the Fort Worth City Council voted to rezone the district’s Fort Worth property to ensure it could only be used for developments like churches, government buildings, schools, health facilities or community centers.

The district opposed the rezoning arguing it would make it harder to sell the property, however, the City Council argued the move was needed to protect residents amid uncertainty over a now abandoned plan to split the district along U.S. 377.

The district initially acquired the property in July 2024 after a months-long push by parents at Basswood Elementary to kill a proposed Super 6 Motel. They cited concerns the project would attract human trafficking, drug dealing and prostitution.

The district board voted to acquire the property in April 2024 citing those same safety concerns and the potential for Basswood Elementary to expand with future residential development on a 297-acre property just north of the site.

However, the Fort Worth City Council voted at its Nov. 11 meeting to rezone 105 acres on the northern edge of that property for to make way for five warehouses.
