Fort Worth ISD is banning cellphones for students. Here’s what you need to know
Students in the Fort Worth Independent School District will no longer be allowed to use cellphones during the school day under a new policy.
The district’s board approved a new cellphone ban Tuesday. The policy mirrors a new Texas state law that goes into effect next month.
Under the district’s policy, students aren’t allowed to use cellphones during the school day, including at lunch or between classes. The policy also extends to other devices like smartwatches, tablets or gaming devices. Students may use those devices before the school day begins and after the final bell. Students may keep their devices with them during the day, but they must be turned off and put away.
The Fort Worth ISD policy follows a bill Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law last month requiring districts to ban students from using cellphones during the school day. Both the state law and Fort Worth ISD’s policy outline exceptions to the rule, including for students who need to use their devices as a part of an individualized education plan or 504 plan, or those who have a documented medical need.
District leaders are asking parents to avoid calling or texting their children during the school day, and advising them to call the front office of their child’s school if they need to reach them during school hours.
Students caught violating the policy could have their devices confiscated and held at the front office until the end of the school day. Those who violate the policy repeatedly could face stiffer penalties, including in-school suspension.
