A student at Legacy High School in Mansfield ISD was arrested on Friday after an AI weapons detection system alerted school officials to a loaded handgun in the student’s backpack, officials said.

A message the school district sent to parents said the weapon was found on Friday morning, Jan. 31.

There was no information to suggest a specific threat against another student or staff member, district officials wrote in the message.

The student is expected to face criminal charges and will be disciplined according to the school’s code of conduct, officials said.

The alert came from the Evolv system, which Mansfield ISD installed its on campuses in 2023 after a shooting at Timberview High School in 2021.
