10-year-old elementary student dies after apparent medical emergency at North Texas school
A North Texas elementary student died suddenly the morning of Oct. 8 after suffering an apparent medical emergency at school.
The fifth-grader from Donna Park Elementary in Hurst was pronounced dead around 9:20 a.m. at a North Richland Hills hospital, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The apparent medical emergency that led to the child being transported to the hospital occurred at the school, according to the address listed on the medical examiner’s website. The cause of his death has not been determined, and results of an autopsy are pending.
Julie McAvoy, the principal of Donna Park Elementary in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, sent an email to school families informing them of the 10-year-old boy’s death and encouraging parents to support their children during this time.
“It is normal for students to create a ‘story’ and fill in gaps when they do not know what’s going on, resulting in rumors,” McAvoy said in the letter. “Feel free to let them know that you understand this is a sad situation, you love and care about them, and you do not have any additional information at this time.”
Extra counselors will be available on campus throughout the rest of the week to support students and staff, McAvoy said.
