‘Unacceptable’: 5-year-old Fort Worth elementary student left at museum after field trip
A Fort Worth elementary student was left behind when his class visited a museum this week, a district spokesperson said.
The incident occurred Wednesday when a group from Carroll Peak Elementary took a field trip to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, according to the spokesperson.
Fort Worth ISD officials issued a statement calling the incident “unacceptable,” and said they have launched an investigation.
“Fort Worth ISD deeply regrets the distress this has caused the family involved and will continue to provide support as we investigate the situation,” the statement reads.
The student is safe and has been reunited with his family, the spokesperson said.
The family of the 5-year-old boy, a kindergarten student, told WFAA-TV that they want to make sure something like this never happens to another child again.
The student’s uncle, Kler Lay, said that when the boy’s mom went to pick him up at Carroll Peak Elementary, staff and the family searched the school for about an hour before realizing the 5-year-old wasn’t there. He said the mother called him while crying hysterically. It took about three hours for his nephew to be located, and they learned he was safe with a security guard at the museum.
“When she was calling me, I was nervous — all I did was pray,” Lay said.
Lay told WFAA that the child’s parents — his brother Kyaw Dow and his sister-in-law — moved to the U.S. from a refugee camp in Thailand over 10 years ago for a better life.
