Haltom High School students have been dismissed after the school was on a secure hold earlier Monday afternoon. The hold began when a school resource officer got a tip that student might have a gun, but no weapon was found, according to police.

Haltom City police announced on Twitter around 2:05 p.m. Monday that the school was on lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” but later updated to say it was a hold status. A school district spokesperson said extra officers were on campus and that the hold was just a precaution.

Police said the school was placed on the secure hold status while officers found the student and searched for a weapon. No weapon was found, the secure hold was lifted and students could be seen leaving the building later Monday afternoon.

A secure hold means classes continue but students stay in their classrooms and nobody is allowed to leave the building.

Mark Thomas, a spokesman for the Birdville school district, said everybody was safe and there was no danger to students or staff.

Some parents commented on the police department’s social media posts saying that they had gotten messages from their children who were frightened after hearing rumors but that the parents and students didn’t know what was going on.
