Student, 18-year-old arrested after gun found on campus of high school in Colleyville
Colleyville Heritage High School went on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a gun was reported in a vehicle on campus, according to a social media post from the Grapevine-Colleyville school district.
All students and staff were safe, according to the district, which announced the lockdown on social media around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said in a news release Tuesday they were called to the school after a report of a handgun on the campus. Police found an 18-year-old man, who was not a student, and two juvenile students and detained and searched them. They didn’t find any weapons on any of them, but a search of one student’s vehicle turned up a handgun.
Police said the 18-year-old was arrested and charged with trespass on school grounds, a Class C misdemeanor, and possession of a weapon in a place where weapons are prohibited, a third-degree felony. One of the detained students was also charged with possession of a weapon where prohibited.
“We take these incidents very seriously and will use all of our resources to ensure that our schools are safe for students and staff,” police said in the release. “We appreciate the patience exhibited by the students, parents, and staff during today’s incident as we worked to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Police also thanked the person who made the initial report, but did not say how that person knew a weapon was on campus. They also didn’t say why the 18-year-old was on campus, or if he was inside a building or on campus grounds outside.
