This Fort Worth school just received a national award for academic excellence

The U.S. Department of Education recognized Fort Worth’s Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences high school with the 2020 National Blue Ribbon honors on Thursday.

The Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences is one of 367 schools recognized for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, according to the National Blue Ribbon website. In Texas, public schools are considered for nomination based on the previous year’s STAAR assessments.

“We are so pleased to be able to share the news about the national distinction that has been bestowed upon our Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences,” Superintendent Kent Scribner said in a press release. “Congratulations to Principal Jack Henson, as well as all of the teachers and students at TABS. This honor is well deserved!”

According to a Fort Worth Independent School District press release, each campus receiving Blue Ribbon honors this year has an economically disadvantaged population of 39% or more. The Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences’ mission is to prepare students for a career in the medical field through an early college education.

The school has a 100% graduation rate and 92% of students earn an associate degree at the same time they graduate from high school.

National Blue Ribbon schools usually find that they attract new business partners, financial assistance and volunteers, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The award was created in 1982 to bring public attention to the best schools in the country and so school officials could share their best practices within and among others.

Fort Worth ISD schools that have received this honor in the past include Young Women’s Leadership Academy, Charles Nash Elementary, Glen Park Elementary, Rufino Mendoza Elementary and Tanglewood Elementary.
