Keller officials hold special meeting to talk about options for new school year amid COVID

Keller school board officials will meet at 5 p.m. Monday to talk about potential changes to the upcoming school year.

Items on the agenda include options for the 2020-21 school year, including:

Changing the school start date; changing some fall school days to half days during the first few days of the school year; and using “transition time” allowed under the Texas Education Agency to begin the year partially remotely.

Action items include changing the school calendar, potentially delaying the start of school and/or moving full class days to half days.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the Education Center, 350 Keller Parkway.

Keller officials announced last week that school would begin Aug. 19 and families could choose whether to attend classes in person or remotely.

But they noted when they sent out that information that a special board of trustees meeting would be held Aug. 3 to “consider whether any action is necessary for the successful opening of our 2020-21 school year.”

This comes as coronavirus cases continue to rise in Tarrant County and school districts work to make classes are as safe as possible.

Fort Worth school officials recently announced they would delay the start of school until Sept. 8 — and then have online classes only for the first four weeks.

The Texas Education Agency has said schools that begin the school year with remote instruction only will continue to be funded for up to eight weeks. But after those eight weeks, schools must reopen fully. Online instruction can continue to be offered to families who prefer it, but the agency will require daily on-campus instruction as well.
