Sidelined by coronavirus, Class of 2020 will shine across Fort Worth skyline Thursday

Editor’s note: This story has been updated May 28 with the corrected day of the celebration. The “shout out” and Fort Worth skyline light-up will take place on Thursday, May 28.

They won’t be able to walk across a stage, but these high school graduates will be the first to light up Fort Worth.

On Tuesday, Fort Worth school district officials announced their special plans to celebrate the class of 2020. On Thursday, the 7th Street Bridge, the Pier 1 building and other landmarks will light up in gold to celebrate the graduating Fort Worth ISD students.

They also asked that the community set aside a minute of their time on Thursday for the 4,928 students whose senior year was sidelined by coronavirus.

“Fort Worth ISD requests that everyone stop what they are doing at 8:20 p.m. for a literal “shout out,’” the district said in a news release. “That hour and minute were chosen because, in military time, it is 20:20.”

The district also asked everyone, starting immediately, to share celebratory comments and photos on social media using the hashtag #FWISDClassof2020.

Billboards will be set up around Fort Worth to celebrate the students who “have had to forgo many of the exciting events associated with their senior year.”

Those signs will center around the words “accomplished, determined, resilient” to praise this group of graduates.
