These Fort Worth-area student councils have earned national recognition for excellence
Seven Fort Worth-area student councils are among the best in the nation, according to the National Student Council organization. They were recently named National Councils of Excellence.
Five high school councils were honored from Keller Central, Mansfield, Birdville, Boswell, and Southlake Carroll. Also making the elite list were junior high councils from Brock and Midlothian’s Frank Seale Middle School.
The award salutes student councils that consistently provide quality leadership activities and service to their schools and communities. There are two levels, with Gold — which all seven earned — being the highest.
Keller Central was also awarded as a Decade of Excellence winner for having been named to the list for 10 consecutive years. It is the only school in Texas to achieve this and one of only 12 in the United States.
“We feel that the purpose of our council is to contribute to a positive culture and climate on our campus, as well as establish relationships within our community. Many people see us as the ‘banner makers’ of the school. However, the council and officers work hard to contribute to school spirit, promote charitable endeavors, provide educational opportunities relevant to today’s society — anti-vaping, mental wellness, suicide awareness, etc. — and more,” Central Student Council Advisor Lianna Gantz said.
“These kids truly care about the potential they have for doing good. Their dedication is outstanding. Student Council isn’t a competition so it’s not about winning, it’s about giving back to our community, and the award recognizes the value of what we do to create a better world.”
Boswell Student Council Sponsor Krysta Reed said the work done by a student council is a testament to the support of student activities at its respective school.
“Our students work hard to tackle the issues facing our students and promote projects that enhance our school culture. I am so proud of the work they do,” Reed said.
Midlothian Assistant Superintendent Karen Fitzgerald noted that only 23 middle schools/junior highs were among the student councils honored nationwide. Frank Seale and Brock were two of the three selected in Texas.
“When you are recognized by the National Student Council association and earn their highest award possible, it is truly an honor,” Frank Seale Principal Kristopher Vernon said. “We are #MISDRPOUD.”
