Colleyville Heritage assistant principal Whitney Kongevick died Tuesday afternoon after a brief stay in the hospital. She was 41.

According to principal Lance Groppel, Kongevick had been experiencing respiratory issues, which turned into an infection and pneumonia. Kongevick was tested three times for the coronavirus while in the hospital, and all tests came back negative.

Kongevick spent the past three years at Colleyville Heritage.

Groppel shared a letter with facility and parents on Wednesday.

“I have some heartbreaking news to share with you. Late yesterday afternoon, one of our assistant principals Whitney Kongevick passed away after a brief stay in the intensive care unit.

“I do not even have the words to express what a loss this is for our Panther community. Whitney was a tremendous supporter of all students and our staff and will be greatly missed. This loss is made even harder in that we cannot be together during this time. While we are unable to give a comforting hug, we are committed to providing counseling support for students that may wish to speak with someone.”

Counselors held a virtual meeting on Wednesday for students that needed support.

“If we learn of any celebrations or remembrances of Whitney’s life, I will be sure to share that information with you,” Groppel said. “Please know that although we are currently apart, we are still one community and we are here to support our students and staff in any way possible.”

Kongevick earned her bachelor’s degree in communication at UT-Arlington. She earned her master’s in education with specialization in professional development from Walden University in Minneapolis.

She previously taught in the Fort Worth school district, including Eastern Hills High School as a secondary math teacher for eight years.
