3 killed in fire in downtown Dallas tower
Three workers were found dead after a fire Thursday morning that forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from the downtown Thanksgiving Tower, authorities said.
The fire broke out on level B2 of the garage on Elm Street just before 11 a.m., WFAA reported. The three workers who died were subcontractors working on the air conditioning system in the basement garage.
Oncor had to turn off power to the building before fire crews could fight the flames.
About 2,800 people were evacuated from the tower. Dallas Fire-Rescue said several people were treated on the street for unknown injuries. Two people were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
About 2:30 p.m., the Dallas Office of Emergency Management said employees were allowed back inside to retrieve their belongings and the garage would be open for them to get their vehicles.
Dallas police Maj. Max Geron said most workers were allowed to go home for the day.
