Plaque to mark spot where LBJ took oath

A bronze marker has been installed near the spot on a runway at Dallas Love Field where Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office and became president after the assassination of John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963.

The marker was donated to the city of Dallas by Farris Rookstool III, a Kennedy historian and former FBI analyst. The plaque is a timeline of JFK’s final hours, starting with Johnson’s plane landing at Love at 11:35 a.m.

Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1 p.m., and Johnson was sworn in at 2:47 p.m. aboard Air Force One while it was parked on the tarmac.

The original plaque will be installed near where the plane was parked and will not be accessible to the public because it is still an air operations area. A replica will be installed in the terminal for the public to read, and a light will shine to show the runway plaque.

The spot where the plaque was placed was determined by measurements taken from old photos and schematics of the airplane, Rookstool said.
