The City of Dallas has named an interim police chief, officials with the interim city manager’s office said in a statement Friday.

Michael Igo, who currently serves as the department’s executive assistant chief, will take over the post on Oct. 18, according to the statement.

Igo has been with the Dallas Police Department for his entire law enforcement career, which spans 33 years, officials with the interim city manager’s office said.

“I look forward to serving in this new capacity, and will continue prioritizing crime reduction, and recruiting the best and brightest that this country has to offer,” Igo said in the statement.

The announcement comes weeks after the department confirmed that current Chief Eddie Garcia will leave the force in November.

Garcia will join the city manager’s office in Austin as an assistant city manager under T.C. Broadnax, KUT Austin reported.
