A 20-year-old woman died at a hospital Tuesday morning after she was hit by a Dallas police squad car while she was trying to cross a road Monday night, according to Dallas police.

Police identified the woman as Aresly Jaramillo.

The fatal accident occurred about 7 p.m. in the 8700 block of Elam Road.

The preliminary investigation determined a Dallas police officer in a marked squad car was en route to a call and was driving east on Elam Road without the car’s emergency lights and siren being activated.

Jaramillo was standing in the median and ran across the road in front of two vehicles that were trying to turn left onto Cedarcliff Drive, the Police Department said in a news release. She ran into the far-left lane, where the officer was driving, and was struck by the police car, according to the release.

The officer stopped to give the pedestrian first aid, and she was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

It’s a tragedy to the pedestrian, to her family,” Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said at a press conference Monday night, according to KDFW-TV. “It’s a tragedy to our officer as well. It’s something we don’t want to go through.”

The officer was not injured in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
