Driver rescued from truck hanging off I-35 bridge after crash in Dallas County
Firefighters and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office traffic deputies worked to rescue a driver in a truck that was hanging off a bridge after crashing on northbound Interstate 35 near Victory Avenue, the sheriff’s office said Monday afternoon.
Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reported staff in its news helicopter saw Dallas firefighters pull the driver out of the wrecked Sherwin-Williams truck.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call about the major accident at the interchange of North Stemmons Freeway and the Dallas North Tollway about 2:30 p.m., the fire department said in a news release.
The box truck ended up hanging off the Stemmons Freeway overpass with the driver stuck inside and unreachable from the roadway, the fire department said. The first arriving companies requested the response of the Urban Search and Rescue Team, which stabilized the truck and conducted a rescue using two DFR aerial ladders.
One of the ladders was placed on the road below, lifting the USAR technicians up to the cab of the truck. Technicians fashioned a rope system at the tip of second ladder and positioned it above the cab, the fire department said.
When team members from the lower ladder reached the driver, they placed him into a harness, hooked him up to the rope system and lifted him to safety.
The driver was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of any injuries.
There was another vehicle involved in the accident, and one person from that vehicle was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office warned drivers to expect delays on I-35E through afternoon rush hour traffic.
