Murder suspect dies after he shoots Dallas cop and officers return fire, police say
A capital murder suspect died Wednesday night after he shot a Dallas police officer in the foot and was shot by officers who were returning fire, police said.
The officer who was shot has been released from the hospital, officials said Thursday.
The shooting happened when officers pulled over a car at an Oak Cliff apartment complex in the 2500 block of Bahama Drive, near Hampton Road and Fort Worth Avenue.
At about 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Dallas fugitive unit was trying to serve an arrest warrant on the teenage suspect for capital murder, officials said in a statement.
Fugitive officers found the suspect, Joey Fraire, 18, in a car and pulled into the apartment complex. Officers told everyone to get out of the vehicle, said Kristen Lowman, Dallas police spokesperson, at a news conference Wednesday.
The driver got out of the vehicle and was taken into custody.
The passenger, Fraire, did not exit the vehicle after repeated commands and he opened fire at officers, shooting one officer in the foot, police said. Officers fired back and shot the suspect.
Both the officer and Fraire were transported to a hospital for treatment.
The wounded officer is expected to be OK, police said.
Fraire was one of five suspects in the Oct. 13 killing of Ramon Lemus Zapata during a home-invasion robbery in Farmers Branch, The Dallas Morning News reported.
The District Attorney’s Office was notified of the shooting, and the Special Investigations Unit will talk to witnesses as the investigation is ongoing.
Police said video from the shooting will be released at a press conference on Friday.
