Fire near Dallas sends massive plume of smoke over parts of Metroplex

Smoke billowing behind bare trees.
A massive fire in an abandoned aviation factory Tuesday morning sent plumes of smoke over nearby residential areas.

A three-alarm fire at an abandoned warehouse near Dallas early Tuesday sent a large plume of smoke over portions of the Metroplex.

Jason Evans, a spokesperson for Dallas Fire-Rescue, said firefighters were dispatched to the blaze around 5:30 a.m. The fire was well-advanced when the units arrived on the scene, and second and third alarms were issued for more equipment. According to Evans, between 60 and 70 firefighters responded.

KXAS-TV reported that smoke from the blaze showed up on their weather radar and was also caught on Texas Department of Transportation cameras.

Evans said the warehouse at 9306 W. Jefferson Blvd. near the boundary between Dallas and Grand Prairie was reportedly an abandoned aviation manufacturing plant that was undergoing demolition.

It wasn’t clear how long the structure had been abandoned or what type of materials had been stored there.

The fire caused the roof to collapse, Evans said, and units expected to remain on the scene for the rest of the day. No injuries were reported.

According to Evans, the cause of the fire will be listed as undetermined due to the amount of damage and the lack of witnesses.
