3 women dead after vehicle stalls near Dallas Zoo, truck crashes into them

Three women were killed early Thursday morning when their vehicle stalled in the middle of a Dallas interstate and a pickup truck struck them from behind, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to positively identify the victims, the sheriff’s department said in a news release around 8:45 a.m. Once officials have identified the women, they will notify next of kin and then release the names.

Multiple other people were sent to hospitals with injuries Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputies were advised of a vehicle stalled in the middle of the southbound lanes of I-35E near South Marsalis Avenue in the area of the Dallas Zoo around 5 a.m., the sheriff’s department said. When deputies arrived, they found the vehicle had been rear-ended by a Ford F-350 truck. There were three women inside.

Two of the women were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. Another woman was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:38 a.m.

The relationship between the women was unclear Thursday morning.

The driver of the truck stopped and is cooperating with deputies, the sheriff’s department said.

It’s unknown at this time if there will be any criminal charges.

Southbound lanes of I-35E were closed for hours after the crash, according to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV. Photos from the news station showed long lines of cars backed up on the interstate.

Lanes were reportedly re-opened as of around 9:15 a.m.
