When the State Fair of Texas throws open its gates on Sept. 30, Big Tex will be sporting a new look — one that honors the five police officers killed in downtown Dallas on July 7.

The 55-foot-long black, white and red shirt along with his new pair of jeans were spread out on the field of the Cotton Bowl Friday morning. The shirt includes a commemorative patch honoring the slain police officers.

And as usual, Fort Worth-based Dickies — the official outfitter of Big Tex and the State Fair — made the new clothes for the icon.

State Fair officials said it’s important to remember the four Dallas police officers and one DART officer who were killed during the ambush. DART provides rail and bus service to the State Fair and Dallas police officers have a strong presence at the annual event.

“We work very closely with Dallas police and DART officers at the State Fair and respect everything that they do,” said Karissa Condoianis, State Fair spokeswoman.

This year’s State Fair will run from Sept. 30 through Oct. 23 at Fair Park in Dallas.
