Keller pediatrician named leader of Texas Medical Association
Dr. Gary Floyd, a Keller pediatrician, began his term as president of the Texas Medical Association Saturday.
The association advocates for the 55,000 Texas doctors and medical students it represents. Floyd will lead the group for one year.
Floyd has had a long career in Tarrant County medicine. The board-certified pediatrician spent 15 years as the medical director for pediatric emergency services at Cook Children’s Medical Center, according to a news release from the Texas Medical Association. He previously worked at JPS Health Network, the county’s large safety-net hospital, as the chief medical officer and executive vice president of medical affairs, the news release said.
In a statement, Floyd said he planned to focus on “protecting the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship; allowing physicians to practice medicine without … interference from insurance or other payers or the government; protecting our patients as they seek assistance for delicate issues; and protecting our physicians as they try to render care to the best of their abilities.”
He was elected president-elect of the association in 2021, and was installed as president Saturday. Floyd graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine at Galveston.
As the leader of the Texas Medical Association, Floyd will be responsible for guiding the group’s priorities and communications as the COVID-19 pandemic continues with only about 65% of legible Texans fully vaccinated against the disease.
