These Fort Worth groups are helping those facing food insecurity during Thanksgiving

Community organizations are working to provide Thanksgiving meals to people facing food insecurity across Tarrant County. There will be food drives and many volunteer opportunities.

At least 11% of Tarrant County residents live in poverty, according to the 2018 United Way ALICE report. The report stated at least 25% of residents live paycheck to paycheck.

Tarrant Area Food Bank

The Tarrant Area Food Bank will have several mobile events during the holiday season. The organization serves people in 13 counties. Its Mega Mobile Markets are open to those who need food assistance. No identification or documentation is required.

Turkey Giveaway Thanksgiving Distribution, Nov. 20: True Love Sanctuary at 1911 Yuma, Fort Worth. The event will start at 8 a.m.

Holiday Mega Mobile Market, Dec. 2: Dickies Arena yellow parking lot at 1911 Montgomery St. The event will be from 11 a.m.-2p.m.

Holiday Mobile Event, Dec. 4: Tarrant Area Food Bank West Distribution Center, 112 Winners Circle in Weatherford. The event is from 9 a.m.-noon.

Mega Mobile Market, Dec. 14: Six Flags Over Texas, 2201 E Road to Six Flags St., Arlington. The event will be from 9 a.m.-noon.

Union Gospel Mission

Union Gospel Mission provides housing, food and shelter to people experiencing poverty. The Fort Worth-based organization is accepting donations to help serve clients through its food pantry. Donations can be dropped off at 1321 E. Lancaster.

Donations accepted:

  • Turkeys (10-12lbs).
  • Mashed potatoes/gravy.
  • Canned yams.
  • Stuffing.
  • Green beans.
  • Dinner rolls.
  • Cranberry sauce.
  • Tea/lemonade.

Operation Turkey

Operation Turkey, a national organization, works to provide food and clothing on Thanksgiving. The organization is accepting meal requests and has volunteer opportunities for those living in the Fort Worth area.

Those who need food can fill out a meal request form online. The meal includes turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pie and a drink.

There are volunteer opportunities for its Turkey Tailgate on Nov. 24 and Thanksgiving event on Nov. 25. To volunteer, visit the organization’s website.
