Fort Worth officer no-billed in fatal shooting of parolee
A police officer who shot and killed a parolee last year after the man allegedly drove a vehicle toward police and bystanders has been no-billed by a Tarrant County grand jury.
The shooting occurred Nov. 23, 2013, after fugitive and zero-tolerance officers went to the Westridge Apartments in the 8800 block of Avril Court in an attempt to arrest Jeremy McGee, 24.
McGee, who was on parole and had outstanding warrants, jumped into a car when he spotted the officers, according to a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney’s office.
In his attempt to flee, McGee crashed into a car, causing minor injuries to a woman inside, and drove through a grassy area, damaging air-conditioning units and a telephone pedestal.
He then drove toward officers and residents standing on the lawn of the apartment complex, prompting one of the officers to fire at the speeding car, hitting McGee twice, the news release states.
McGee later died at a Fort Worth hospital.
Officials did not release the officer’s name.
“The law allows an officer to resort to deadly force when there is an imminent danger involving serious bodily injury or death to a third party,” Jack Strickland, deputy chief district attorney said in the release. “In this instance, the speeding vehicle was a deadly weapon. This officer was justified in discharging his firearm under the law and under the facts of this unfortunate incident.”
