The Lakeside Police Department took a man into custody after an attempted traffic stop resulted in reckless driving, a chase and a visit from the bomb squad, police said.

About 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, an officer attempted to stop a white sedan traveling westbound on a service road without its headlights on. As the officers tried to stop the car, they saw it traveling between 90 and 100 mph.

The Lakeside Police Department said the situation “escalated” when the sedan started driving the wrong way on the road still without lights on. Officers then turned on their emergency lights in an attempt to intercept the car before anyone was harmed.

The vehicle then swerved into the shoulder of the highway, hitting a TxDOT “Do Not Enter Sign.”

In a search of the car, officers found multiple “suspicious pyrotechnic devices.” They described the items as heavily modified, wrapped in black electrical tape, and having multiple exposed fuses and pull rings.

The Fort Worth Police Department Bomb Squad was then requested to help at the scene and used X-ray equipment to determine one of the devices was designed as a projectile weapon containing an explosive charge.

The driver admitted that the weapon was constructed using a component of an airsoft gun and said it contained fireworks and BB projectiles, according to the Lakeside Police Department.

The driver was taken into custody and is facing charges of reckless driving and possession of a prohibited weapon, according to the Lakeside Police Department.
