Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Richard Hogan was chewing his dinner on a night in August 2025 when he received a call from Chief Deputy James Saulter.

Hogan’s wife used her phone to record the call.

“He asked me if I went to see the sheriff’s attorneys,” Hogan testified on Monday before a prosecutor played the recording for the jury in Sheriff Adam King’s trial on an indictment that accuses him of abuse of office related to sexual harassment and retaliation against witnesses.

Hogan told Saulter, who the lieutenant said had an inquisitive and nervous tone, that he had seen the attorneys.

Hogan had food in his mouth when he was speaking during the five-minute call. Silverware clanked in the recording.

During his time on the witness stand, Hogan testified that he believes Saulter, in an effort to have King removed from office, sought out people who were not offended by King’s conduct who Saulter assessed “should be offended.”

King is accused in the indictment of retaliating against Saulter for reporting allegations that King sexually harassed employee Anna Goodloe.

Hogan testified that he immediately called King when the telephone conversation with Saulter ended.

“He told me to bring the recording to him,” Hogan testified.

Hogan recounted driving to King’s house, where the sheriff, the lieutenant and their wives listened to the recording.

In another line of questioning, a prosecutor asked Hogan whether, if Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Danny Rogers had testified that Hogan told Rogers the allegations in the indictment were true, the testimony was true. Rogers oversees the criminal investigations division.

Such testimony would be a “blatant lie,” Hogan testified.

The trial, in its sixth day, resumed at 1:15 p.m. with Hogan remaining on the stand.
