Another member of Arlington fraud family sentenced to federal prison
A fourth member of an Arlington family that orchestrated a multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison, U.S. attorneys said.
Brandon Hunt, his twin brother Baylon, his half-brother Corey and his father David all collaborated to file false claims for tax returns in the names of trusts they controlled, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday.
Brandon Hunt was sentenced on Thursday, May 28, after a trial in Fort Worth in the Northern District of Texas federal court.
In total, the four were seeking over $8.5 million in tax refunds to which they were not entitled, officials said. Additionally, Hunt filed more false returns in his own name to seek additional fraudulent refunds.
In order to secure the funds, the family members submitted fake financial instruments and money orders, continuing to do so even after the IRS sent them letters telling them to stop, according to the statement.
The co-conspirators managed to receive over $1.7 million in fraudulent proceeds from their scheme, which they shared and used to purchase luxury goods, cars, furniture, real estate and cryptocurrency.
In addition to prison time, Hunt was also ordered to pay back the $1.7 million in restitution to the federal government, according to the statement.
