Johnson County sheriff’s deputies shot a man they say pulled out a gun after a vehicle chase, according to a statement released Saturday.

The suspect, Joseph Boy, was reported to have multiple warrants out for his arrest and is accused of making threats that he would rather engage in a shootout with law enforcement than return to prison, officials said.

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety located Boy and attempted a traffic stop, but Boy fled, and a chase ensued, according to the statement. Deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the pursuit, which ended after officers conducted a PIT maneuver.

The maneuver caused the vehicle to crash, and during attempts to take Boy into custody, he pulled out a firearm and was shot by law enforcement.

Boy was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition is unknown, and the investigation is active, officials said.
