A Round Rock high school football coach was arrested Monday in connection with an alleged instance of child abuse that occurred in Arlington two years ago, police said.

Jonathan Cruz, 41, was hired in March as the head football coach of Round Rock’s McNeil High School. Cruz previously worked as an assistant football coach at Arlington Bowie High School and head coach at Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School in Fort Worth.

The Arlington Police Department was notified by Texas CPS in January 2024 about an incident involving Cruz, and the department’s Crimes Against Children Unit began an investigation, Arlington police officials said. After the investigation, police put out a warrant for Cruz’s arrest on one count of injury to a child.

Cruz was arrested in Williamson County and was booked at the county jail there, police said.

Because the investigation involves a child, police are limited in what information they can release, but officials did clarify that the incident was “domestic in nature” and did not involve students at any schools where Cruz worked.

Cruz has been placed on administrative leave, officials with the Round Rock Independent School District confirmed to KVUE-TV.
