A man who was injured in a struggle with Irving police officers during a traffic stop Monday afternoon later died at the hospital, police said.

Officers stopped a vehicle shortly before 8 p.m. near North Belt Line Road and Cross Country Trail, police said in a news release

Officers tried to take the driver into custody on suspicion of possession of narcotics when he resisted and engaged in a physical struggle with officers, according to police.

After the man was handcuffed, officers noticed that he was injured as a result of the struggle, police said.

The Irving Fire Department responded to the scene and the man was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man after his next of kin have been notified and determine his official cause of death.

No officers were injured during the incident, police said.

The Irving Police Department has begun a criminal and administrative investigation in line with the department’s policy. The Dallas County Public Integrity Unit will also conduct a separate investigation, according to the release.
