Fort Worth police arrest suspect after man is injured in shooting at Hulen Mall

A man was injured in what police believe was a targeted shooting outside Hulen Mall in Fort Worth on Saturday afternoon, and officers arrested a suspect later that night.

The shooting was reported about 2 p.m. in a grassy area near the parking lot close to the Red Robin restaurant and Macy’s on the east side of the mall, at 4700 S. Hulen St. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing at least one gunshot outside while the mall was crowded with Christmas shoppers.

The victim, identified in a police report as a 47-year-old man, was shot in the leg and is expected to survive. Gun Violence Unit detectives believe that the victim and shooter know each other, a police spokesperson said.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia announced in a social media post that a suspect, 21-year-old Kyonte Mitchell, was tracked down and taken into custody Saturday night by the department’s Fugitive Unit.

Mitchell faces a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He also had an outstanding warrant on the same charge in a separate incident, Garcia said.

Mitchell, who is from Fort Worth, was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on Sunday. Bond has not been set.

In the preliminary investigation of Saturday’s shooting, officers found that the victim was walking outside the mall when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him, police said.

Detectives were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video as they investigated what led to the shooting.

An off-duty officer from another agency and off-duty medical personnel helped the victim until Fort Worth Fire Department medics arrived to take him to a hospital, police said.

No one answered the phone at the Hulen Mall office Saturday afternoon, but the mall remained open and shoppers could be seen coming and going from the stores.

Macy’s employee Fernanda Barbosa said she was in the men’s department when the shooting occurred. It was close enough to the store for her to hear the shots. The store wasn’t evacuated, but security personnel locked the door closest to where the incident occurred and wouldn’t let anyone leave by that way for about 10 minutes.

“It was isolated,” Barbosa said of the shooting.

Mamta Rizal was working at Sunglass Hut in another part of Macy’s.

“I didn’t even know what happened,” she said.

Rizal learned about the shooting from others who’d been closer to the incident.

The parking lot was full of cars at 4:45 p.m. Macy’s was crowded with holiday shoppers in spite of the police cars in front of the east entrance and the crime-scene tape around the area next to the door.
