Arlington elementary student faces charges after bringing unloaded gun to school
Arlington police are trying to find out where an elementary student got the gun he allegedly brought to school Monday, officials said.
Officers were called to McNutt Elementary, at 3609 S. Center St., after staff found an unloaded gun in a boy’s backpack. According to a letter school officials sent to parents, several students had reported seeing a classmate with a weapon.
The responding officers learned the boy had verbally threatened some of the other students. The juvenile was arrested and charged with terroristic threat and carrying a weapon in a prohibited place, police said. He was taken to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center and won’t be publicly identified due to his age.
The investigation is ongoing, police said, and detectives with the Violent Crime Unit are trying to determine where the boy got the weapon.
“I am grateful for the students who spoke up and let us know,” McNutt Principal Chelsea Broughton said in the letter to families. “Please remind your students how important it is to let a teacher or adult know whenever they see or hear anything suspicious.”
