A 7-year-old boy was taken to a hospital Thursday night after being injured by broken glass in a road rage shooting near Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine, and a suspect has been arrested, police said.

A man called 911 around 8 p.m. and said someone had fired into his pickup truck while he was driving north on Texas 121 near Bass Pro Drive. His family, including three children, were inside the vehicle with him. The man returned fire and followed the suspected shooter, according to police.

Dispatchers told the man to stop at a nearby gas station. His 7-year-old son and an adult passenger were injured by broken glass. The child was taken to a hospital for treatment, and the adult was treated and released at the scene. No one else was hurt in the shooting, police said, including the other two child passengers.

The pickup’s driver gave police the license plate number of the suspected shooter’s car. Officers identified the owner as a Flower Mound resident and reached out to him by phone. He refused to speak with them and hung up, police said.

Officers from the Grapevine and Flower Mound police departments and the Northeast Tarrant County Area SWAT Team showed up at the suspect’s house on Big Canyon Drive. Negotiators convinced the man to give himself up. He was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Friday, examined by medics as a precaution and taken to the Grapevine Detention Center.

Police identified the suspect as 59-year-old John Schwoyer. He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
